Session 9 (2001)

Starring David Caruso, Peter Mullan, Stephen Gevedon & Josh Lucas.

A small company comprised of just a handful of workers bids and wins a project to remove asbestos from a long abandoned building. The building is an insane asylum that was closed down 20 years prior.

Gordon (Mullan) has enough on his hands already with his wife at home and a newborn baby that is leaving him sleepless. Phil and Hank (Caruso & Lucas) don’t see eye to eye as Phil thinks Hank is a liability to the job, and not to mention Hank has stolen and now lives with his ex-girlfriend. So they all have a lot on their minds, and they only have one pressure filled week to complete the job in order to receive a $10,000 bonus.

One of the guys finds some tapes in the basement where a doctor is interviewing a patient with multiple personalities. Another one of the workers finds a hidden compartment in the wall filled with old coins and pieces of gold. But there’s more to this old asylum than just the relics, and it appears to be slowly haunting the men working there. The men start acting strange in different ways as you feel the building slowly start to invade their minds in various ways.

But then she is floored when the captain (Bean) tells her that her daughter was never on the flight. In fact, her daughter had actually perished along with her husband.

She needs to be subdued by the air marshal (Sarsgaard) because she doesn’t believe what they’re telling her and knows she boarded the plane with her daughter. She must do whatever she can to find her daughter, whether those on the plane think she is delusional or not.

Saw (2004)

Starring Leigh Whannell, Cary Elwes, Danny Glover, Ken Leung & Dina Meyer.

Saw is actually now a series of 4 movies, each one more grotesque and horrifying than the next. This is the one that started it all though and IMO was the best of the bunch. I’ll review the next 3 over the next several weeks.

Two men slowly awaken from what appears to be drugged states. They are in a bathroom, below the ground, and both are chained by their ankles to piping in the room. Neither of these men know one another, nor how they got into this room.

In between them is a dead man lying on the floor, in a pool of blood. He’s holding onto a small tape player. Each man then finds a small tape in their clothing. They play the tapes and realize they are involved in some sort of sadistic game. One is told he must kill the other guy within a certain amount of time or his family will die.

They are lead to a hacksaw that is hidden in the toilet, but the blade isn’t sharp enough to cut the chains. Time is running down and the thought of escaping seems near impossible. The blade isn’t sharp enough to cut metal, but it’s sharp enough to cut through the human body…

Demons from her past

Starring Alexandra Paul, Michael Woods, John Ralston & Rob Stewart.

Allison (Paul) has just completed a sentence in prison of 25 years for killing a young boy. The only problem is, she never committed the crime.

She now returns to her hometown to investigate and set the record straight, but there are a handful of characters who would rather the truth remain buried.

Ray (Woods) is now a police officer, and he isn’t afraid to use his powers to hold her down. KC (Stewart) is a politician running for office and is very controlling, and certainly isn’t going to allow the past to ruin his career.  Quentin (Ralston) works at a boat shop and is the weak link, still feeling guilty after all these years and has a sweet spot for Allison.

Allison wants the truth out and won’t stop digging for proof, but she must work quickly or she’ll find herself buried along with the past.

Donnie Darko (2001)

Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Holmes Osborne, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Daveigh Chase & Patrick Swayze.

Donnie Darko is a disturbed high school student who is in therapy for his severe depression and fears. One night he is awoken from sleep by a voice and drawn outside his house. Here he is confronted with a purple rabbit talking to him, telling him that the Earth is going to end in 28 days. A few moments later a jet engine lands in his bedroom, completely destroying it. Had he not followed the rabbit outside he would be dead.

The rabbit keeps appearing to Donnie throughout the film, reminding him of the impending end and having him commit crimes. His parents are worried and step up the therapy and his therapist knows he is deeply disturbed.

Donnie thinks the rabbit saved his life so he follows him and listens to whatever he tells him. He starts to investigate time travel as he thinks he is seeing things from the future and past. He’s also drawn to a book written by a now very old woman from his neighborhood who appears to have went senile and stands in the road all day long and checking her mailbox.

Donnie starts rebelling at school and questioning everything around him. As the world is impending doom, he is determined to get answers about his new friend, the rabbit, before the world ends.
