Cruel World (2005)

Starring Edward Furlong, Jaime Pressly, Daniel Franzese, Susan Ward & Nate Parker.

Philip Markham (Furlong) was recently on a TV reality show where he was to win the love of a beautiful woman (Pressly) against other vying men. He was in love and made it to the last 2 before he was dumped on live TV. He was sure she made a mistake, and he’s going to make sure she knows that.

He takes over the home where the show took place and has his own show by finding contestants on the internet to compete for 1 million dollars on his own reality show, which of course is for his own amusement.

He holds his own competitions and has daily eliminations, and instead of going home, the losers get to die one by one.

Perfect Hideout (2008)

Starring Billy Zane, Cristian Solimeno & Melinda Cohen.

A young couple are about to go on a trip to start a new life. Just as they are ready to go, Nick (Solimeno) gets a phone call demanding he pay back money he owes some powerful people. They threaten his mother in law, so he has little choice. He decides to try an hold up a convenience store but is interrupted as a police officer walks in. They get into a struggle and the cop is accidentally shot, and later dies.

With the police looking for them in droves now, Nick and his girlfriend, Celia (Cohen), decide to take refuge in a home they come across. They run into Victor (Zane) inside the home and tie him up in the kitchen. They repeatedly ask him where the rest of the family is from the home and he keeps telling them that they are at dinner. Dinner - yes - he has slaughtered his entire family at the dinner table in the other room. They have taken refuge amongst a murderer.

The movie is intense at times but also adds a lot of humor in to break up the monotony. Billy Zane makes this whole movie with his outstanding acting. He is very calm and deliberate with his actions, all the signs of a mental murderer.

Now Nick and Celia not only have the police to worry about, but their own lives as well.

Graduation (2007)

Starring Shannon Lucio, Riley Smith, Chris Marquette & Chris Lowell.

4 teenagers are about to graduate from high school but all seem to be lost in life for their own individual reasons. Carl’s (Marquette) Mom has Cancer and is slowly dying, in desperate need of a bone marrow transplant, but they haven’t the money or insurance to cover such an operation.

Polly (Lucio) is a good looking and intelligent young woman. Her father is the manager of the local bank. She suspects, and confirms, that her father is messing around with one of the women who works at his bank. I think this is what puts her over the edge.

She proposes to her friends that they rob her fathers bank to collect enough money for Carl’s Mom to have her operation. At first they are hesitant, but soon realize that Polly has much access and the plans to pull this off.

They have the typical fights over trust and friendship as they slowly put the plan into play but are determined to pull off the job the morning of their graduation.

For a movie that apparently went straight to DVD, I thought this was a great story and well acted.

Big Fish (2003)

Starring Ewan McGregor, Albert Finney, Billy Crudup, Jessica Lange, Robert Guillame & Danny Devito.

This is a story of a young man and his search to “know” his father. All his life, Will Bloom (Crudup), lived with his father telling outlandish stories about his life. Now that his father is dying, he wants to know his “real” father. What follows is the story telling by various characters in the movie of Ed Blooms life (Finney). Ed Bloom growing up is played by McGregor.

Will has had a bit of a falling out with his father as he grew more and more tired of his stories and fantasies. But now he would like to find out more about the truth. His father is adamant that what he has told him has in fact been the truth. While others put up with his stories a bit more, it would appear they think he’s just a good talker as well.

This movie takes you on a trip with the elder Bloom along his life and the many strange and amazing things he came across. From a huge fish never caught, Siamese twins, war stories and of course an unbelievable love story thrown in for good measure. Whether you believe his tales or not doesn’t make you enjoy his life any less. But what if you found out it was all true?
